SOCIOL 122 - PUNISH/TREAT OF DEVIANTS
The history, philosophy, and procedures of punishment and treatment. The development of the penal system; the structure and operation of "total institutions" such as prisons and hospitals; the various sanctions. The issues and problems confronting both inmates and staff in contemporary prisons and concerns related to the imprisonment of women; the rights of prisoners and crime victims, the release of offenders and their return to society; current punishment and treatment of those defined as criminals within the context of what goal is intended; comparison of punishment and treatment procedures or programs in different parts of the world with the United States.
